Cancellation & Abandonment (C&A)
With any event, from a small conference to the Olympic Games, some degree of financial outlay for planning, preparation, services and facilities will have to be made in advance, in anticipation of income from the event. These initial costs are often deposits that are non-refundable if the event doesn't go ahead and is Cancelled, Abandoned or Postponed.
If the worst happens, C&A cover protects the Event Organiser their irrecoverable costs and can sometimes be extended to include a certain percentage of estimated 'net profit' from the event.
C&A coverage is limited to risks that are beyond the control of the Insured and does not cover War, Financial or Trading losses.
Often venue owners will have Public Liability insurance but will insist Event Organsiers have their own Public Liability to protect them for the event. In many cases, SSR can offer Public Liability with the C&A cover, tied in to a specific event.
Some examples of events that can be covered by C&A include:
- Sporting Events
- Conferences, Conventions & Seminars
- Exhibitions & Trade Fairs
- Concerts & Theatre Productions
- Agricultural & Horticultural Shows
- Charity Events, Balls & Sponsored Events
- Product Launches
Common causes of Cancellation include:
- Fire damage to the venue or equipment
- Injury to participants or spectators
- Denial of access
- Bomb threat
- Transport strikes
- Accidental damage
For SSR to provide a quote, the following information is required:
- Nature, location, date and duration of the Event
- Sum Insured (including a copy of the budget wherever possible)
- Details regarding any prior loss or incident which could cause Cancellation
A fully completed proposal form will be required but the above information will usually be enough to enable a rough indication to be given. For the full information required to quote, please refer to the proposal form in Forms & Wordings.
Non Appearance
Some events such as concerts, are dependent on a particular person or group, speaking or performing. If the main attraction can't make it, the entire show could be cancelled. To protect against this risk, Non-Appearance cover can be arranged.
For Non-Appearance cover, the essential people have to be named and agreed in advance and would normally have to be 'under contract' to appear. Coverage is limited to risks that are beyond their control. For sickness cover to be included, a medical certificate or doctor's report may be required.

Adverse Weather
Most outdoor events can be seriously effected by bad weather.
In many cases, SSR can offer limited cover for "Adverse Weather" which protects the Event Organiser against cancellation where weather conditions are such that the health and safety of participants or attendees is put at risk.
In these circumstances, the emergency services or local authority may prevent the event from going ahead or may stop the event mid way.
